Unlikely beginnings

The Light Yard came into being somewhat by accident in 2013 when founder, Jeff Fuller, returned home after having lived and worked as a chef in France for the best part of a decade.

A chance meeting some years earlier had ignited a passion for handcrafted lighting, and with his expanding young family, he settled in the outskirts of Manchester.

Jeff teamed up with renowned artisan landscape lighting designer Gwyn Carless to explore ways of creating new textures and shapes with float glass. From this, a new business was born.

"Believe in yourself, do everything with care & integrity, and anything is possible"

Jeff Fuller, Founder

The Alchemist Collection is launched

The Light Yard's reputation builds as Jeff & Gwyn look to use their in-depth knowledge of exterior waterproof lighting to create a stunning collection of hand-cut glass pendant & wall lights for interiors and bathrooms.

They took the unique approach of handcrafting a light shade to encapsulate a carefully selected Edison filament light bulb, rather than the traditional approach of finding a bulb to fit a shade.

The Signature pendant light, with its sleek fluted glass and elegant design, became the blueprint for other designs that followed.

The Alchemist Collection is officially launched at the Hotel Design Summit, London.

Production moves to Chesterfield

Due to an increase in demand, production is moved from a converted barn in the heart of the Derbyshire countryside to a new, purpose-built 1,400 sq ft unit on the outskirts of Chesterfield City Centre.

The popularity of the Alchemist Collection continues to grow, and the IP44 Bathroom Series is launched.

Commissions from clients across the globe start to fill the order book, and our small company becomes international.

A private residence remodel located on Maui, Hawaii's "valley isle", remains one of The Light Yard's most remarkable residential projects to date.

"It’s a remarkable property to begin with, and your lights really pulled it all together. I don’t think I could have had a different or better choice. There was no one else who could touch what you did.”

Sara Woodfield, lead architect at Harrison Woodfield Architects, Inc

With many lessons learnt from their previous 2018 RHS show at Tatton Park in Cheshire, England, Jeff and Gwyn successfully gained a stand at the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show and realised their dream.

The show proves to be a huge success, with both consumers and designers, and our small business takes yet another big step forward.
