Article: How Great Lighting Makes Your Bathroom Special

How Great Lighting Makes Your Bathroom Special

Unwinding after a long day by rejuvenating yourself in the tub is the perfect way to enjoy a quiet moment of solitude and contemplation. It’s sometimes a completely overlooked, simple pleasure that reduces stress and keeps us going. The light in our bathrooms affects us hugely. It’s not just a nice aesthetic. When we are at work, we need that full bright blue-and-white spectrum to focus us, to emulate what we would naturally get outside. While this is good in front of the mirror, it’s not conducive to relaxation.

Good lighting certainly adds a lot to our bathrooms, given all the reflective surfaces; however, due to the humidity and water, we must be careful not to get a shock! So we must understand lighting protection ratings. This can feel a bit technical at first, but once you know the basics, it becomes wonderfully straightforward.

The IP44 Orbital Bathroom Pendant Light

The key thing to note here is to ensure you are using IP44 lighting:

  • IP44 offers solid protection against solid objects larger than 1mm and water splashes from any direction.

  • It’s ideal for bathrooms where occasional splashes from sinks or showers might occur.

  • It’s also good outdoors as they work beautifully in covered outdoor areas such as porches, pergolas or under eaves.

  • Choosing the right rating gives you peace of mind, allowing design to take centre stage.

We specialised in handcrafted IP44 lighting and have been focusing on that since 2013. Our mission is to create artisanal pieces that look stunning and perform reliably in your home.

Where can you use IP44 lighting?

Anywhere there may be splashes and high humidity. IP44 is suitable for walls above basins, around mirrors, or suspended from a ceiling.

Many homeowners love pairing our hand-finished cluster pendants or elegant wall lights with warm Edison-style bulbs – the result feels luxurious yet safely practical.

Outdoors, IP44 performs well in protected locations; it still needs to be covered. So think wall lights beside a covered front door, path lights under a porch overhang, or hanging lanterns on a pergola. In typical British weather, these fittings shrug off rain showers and morning dew while resisting dust and leaves.

You need to avoid fully exposed spots that could be reached by driving rain or a pressure washer.

Why craftsmanship matters with IP44 lights

A rating alone doesn’t guarantee beauty or longevity. That’s why we craft every piece in our Derbyshire workshop using textured materials like hand-cut glass, gilded copper, gold leaf and solid brass.

Each fitting is designed so the protection is built in discreetly – you see only the style, not the engineering.

Our Pendant lights are firm favourites, offering that perfect mix of artisan detail and reliable performance. Customers often tell us how the warm glow transforms their space while giving them complete confidence in wetter areas.

What exactly does IP44 mean?

The letters “IP” stand for Ingress Protection – this is a standard for measuring how well a light fitting keeps out dust, debris and moisture.

  • The first number (4) tells you the fixture is guarded against objects bigger than 1mm, such as wires or small tools.

  • The second number (4) means it can handle water splashing from any angle without letting moisture reach the electrics.

This makes IP44-rated lights splash-proof rather than fully waterproof. They’re not designed for constant immersion or powerful jets (you’d need an IP rating of 65 or higher for that). Still, they cope brilliantly with the kind of everyday exposure most of us encounter in bathrooms or semi-sheltered garden spots.

Choosing the right IP44 light for your home

Start by thinking about the exact location. Measure the space, consider the style of your interiors or garden, and check the fitting’s zone suitability. If you’re unsure, our “Find My Light” tool or a quick chat with the team can help.

Remember, good lighting should enhance your home, not just illuminate it. With the right IP44 pieces, you get safety, durability and beauty all in one.

Whether you’re updating a steamy bathroom or adding a welcoming glow to your entrance, our lighting lets you enjoy British craftsmanship without compromise.
